Mt. Cook/ Haast Pass

Next day we took a very long drive around the southern Alps on our way to Franz Josef to check out the glaciers- 7 hours, oy! But very pretty.

First up, we stopped at Mt. Cook, the highest peak in NZ to do some hiking. We’d also heard that during the earthquake 30 million tons of ice fell off of a glacier there and was now floating in a lake where you can take boat rides- can you imaging being in the boat when that was happening?? I’d shit myself twice and die of fright right then and there. One of the boat operators said there were 3 meter (9 foot) waves and folks were shaken, but everyone was fine. Well obviously we had to see this, right? This is what 30 million tons of ice floating in a lake looks like:

Crazy, huh? Glad we missed that too!

The area was pretty and it was a nice easy hike. We moved on after a few hours there since we still had so much driving to do. Here are some pictures of the rest of the drive- most are from Haast Pass, which was very pretty and well worth the drive!
